Inside Beyonce’s ‘Club Renaissance’ Event in Los Angeles
On Friday night, lines were formed outside a relatively unmarked warehouse space in Downtown Los Angeles for Club Renaissance. It is a two-night event celebrating Renaissance, Beyonce’s seventh studio album. This album was released in July and is a kaleidoscopic exploration of genre, self-expression, and escapism on it. Beyonce has done many experiments with different shades of dance, house, disco, R&B, and pop. The party had an unspoken 1970’s era theme which the attendees interpreted for their outfits in various ways, much like the sonic versatility of the project itself. The event was presented by Amazon Music and Parkwood Entertainment and featured several notables in attendance, including Kenya Barris, Lori Harvey, and singers Victoria Monet, Lucky Daye, and Syd.
The building was fully lined with graphic posters of a Renaissance promotional image. Several partygoers had used his image as the backdrop for their photographs. There was another wall ripe for photo opportunities decorated with neon signs that bore song lyrics and titles from the album like Church Girl and Cozy. Guests had chatted and sipped thematically named cocktails once the doors were open. The DJ had begun to play Renaissance top to bottom approximately an hour after the event had started at 9 pm. Attendees enjoyed it from the dance floor for the duration, which created the very Studio 54-esque dance party that the project had promised. A group of engineers had tucked along the periphery, controlled the sensory displays, and included strobe lights and fog elements.
The glowing holographic horse Beyonce was seated on the album cover art. It was prominently placed in the center of the room and was enclosed in a glass box like a museum artifact. Throughout the night, there was a buzz in the air about whether Beyonce would be joining the event as she had done in previous cities. Saturday’s event is expected to get more of the singer’s fan base. Free tickets were released online to her subscribers earlier in the week and sold out in under 20 minutes.
